BRENDON SMALL: “DETHKLOK is More Like What if The KARDASHIANS Played Death Metal”
Brendon Small was recently on the podcast (click player above to hear the interview) to discuss the upcoming Galaktikon release, Galaktikon II: Become the Storm. During the conversation, Brendon shared his thoughts on his acclaimed animated metal band DETHKLOK being welcomed by the metal community.
“As much of a dummy as I may be, I was smart enough to realize that the metal community is very protective of itself. And as a fan of metal, I would be too. So, I thought we were going to get a bunch of dudes wearing black with their arms folded, frowning, saying this does not represent us. I just anticipated that. So I did everything that I could do to make sure that everyone knew that this is for metal fans, and if anybody else wants to check it out, they can. But my first thing was to make sure that the metal community knew that they were a part of the joke. It wasn’t a joke about them. It was a joke that they would understand first, before anybody else. So we did something. We would make inside jokes that were just for metal fans. And then we would cast people. I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to meet all my metal heroes, my guitar heroes, and my acting heroes all in the same place. It was kind of deliberate that the first episode has METALLICA on it, and then a few episodes later we have KING DIAMOND, and then guys from ENSLAVED, and all these different kinds of people from the guitar and metal world being funny, being part of the joke. Not being made fun of, what we do make fun of is just the isms of a band. The close quarters of being in a family situation. The show when you boil it down, it has nothing to do with heavy metal. It’s a family show. It’s a family that has to work together. It’s more like what if the KARDASHIANS played death metal. It’s about celebrityism. It’s about inept celebrities being given too much responsibility and destroying things at the same time. So it was kind of ahead of its time in that way, but at the same time all those challenges were things that I foresaw and thought, we would make a couple wrong moves and this could be a real disaster. But if we do it right were going to get all these people to realize that this is an audience that hasn’t been spoken to yet. And lets make sure we do it right because some jerk is going to come along and do it wrong and blow it for everybody.”
Galaktikon II: Become The Storm follows the space-age theme of 2012’s original Galaktikon album, with a conceptual storyline and a heavier, darker, more brutal sound. In addition to Brendon Small and Grammy-nominated producer/engineer Ulrich Wild (who also worked on the Dethklok albums), Galaktikon II: Become The Storm features the distinct rhythmic powers of drum legend Gene Hoglan (Testament, Death, Dark Angel) and bassist extraordinaire Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai). With uncapped time and creativity on their side, the aforementioned artists have created a heavy metal opus that Dethklok fanatics will covet and newcomers to the world of Brendon Small will add to the top of their playlists.
The album will be available August 25th through Megaforce Records.
