Ep. 213 Thom Hazaert (Ellefson)

Thom Hazaert joins the show this week to discuss the upcoming David Ellefson book and album. Thom talks about his background singing in bands and recording this project. We discuss the recent Megadeth and Dave Mustaine news. Thom also talks about the EMP Label Group and what he looks for in bands to sign.

On the Mustaine news and how it impacted the Ellefson camp:

THOM HAZAERT “Honestly, it’s something that has been going on for weeks, we couldn’t say anything and nobody knew anything and nobody knew what was gonna happen… The decision to cancel everything was literally just made a couple fucking days ago… At first it was like, we’re gonna do everything and It’ll be fine. Then they started his treatments and they just realized they weren’t gonna be able to do it… So it’s been an ongoing thing. I mean, it feels like a big sudden thing but it’s really been kind of a casual thing going on over here with them trying to figure out what they were going to do… I was trying to figure out what we’re going to do around what they’re going to do and obviously everything we do works around Megadeth so we were just kind of sitting back going ‘fuck what’s gonna happen.'”

TALK TOOMEY: “Well, Megadeth has had a very odd year because of the Ozzy cancellations and scrambling to fill in those dates. And then now you’ve got Dave’s diagnosis and trying to fill that time and it’s been a mess for 2019 for Megadeth.”

THOM HAZAERT “That’s the last thing they wanted after the Ozzy cancellation and everything else was have to cancel anything. That’s why Mustaine was so adamant about ‘No, I’m just gonna do my treatment. We’re going to keep the shows scheduled’… but literally needed his treatments the same time they’re supposed to be doing shows. I think that’s the last thing he wanted, because of that Ozzy thing that compounded it because that had nothing to do with them. They were ready to go out and do that…The last thing Mustaine ever wants to do is disappoint fans… the last thing anybody in Megadeth wants to do is disappoint the fans… I think this was a really, really fucking hard decision to make. And that’s why they took so long after getting the diagnosis to figure out what they’re going to do and I think he really wanted to see if there’s any way to not cancel shit. He was gonna not cancel it. Obviously, I am in David’s camp, and in no way a spokesperson for Megadeth, nor do I claim to be. But obviously this has a huge impact on everything we do as well. And we’re both praying for the best for Dave Mustaine and Megadeth.”
